Alonso Identifies Weaknesses in Aston Martin F1: Reveals Plan for 2024

1 years ago By Sports Desk

British Formula 1 racing team Aston Martin experienced a stellar season in 2023, finishing 5th in the constructors’ championship, with the main courtesy of the veteran Spanish driver Fernando Alonso.

Aston Martin started the season with constant podium finishes, but their performance started declining as the season progressed, especially in the second half.

Reflecting on the 2023 season, the veteran Spaniard said he is very pleased with the team’s performance, but he also thinks there are some things they could’ve done better.

Looking forward to the next season, the veteran driver discussed the possible upgrades they could add to the next year’s car.

Here are the weaknesses Alonso identified in the Aston Martin F1.

Alsono, the two-time F1 championship winner, discussed that to win more podiums in 2024, they must improve their straight-line speed. Throughout the 2023 season, they lacked straight-line speed, which cost them much-needed points in the crucial moments.

He further discussed Aston Martin’s lack of corner speed and
Rare wing problems, which they could improve in 2024.

He also criticizes the car’s consistency. Saying the car miserably failed to perform at a consistent level, causing them lots of retirements in 2023. Reverse-engineering parts meant for 2024 to run on the AMR23 are said to have injured Aston, and it also may have caused them to go off track.

Alonso argues that in order to advance further and increase top speed, designers must address the drag level and widen the car’s operational window as the team gets ready for the 2023 race season.
“I think we need to find some consistency,” he clarified. The fact that the car had to function in a very small window could have been one of its weak aspects.

“Everyone is experiencing the same issues [with the ground-effect cars proving to be especially sensitive], but it appears like we’re having some difficulties. It would be great if we could consistently operate at a stable level next year.”

Additionally, if we can increase our straight-line speed, I believe that was our weak part in terms of performance metrics. Always a tad too slow when traveling straight.

Looking ahead to 2024, he said he feels he is very optimistic about the car’s performance and can’t wait to get behind the wheel and give it all out in the field for the team.
