Fernando Alonso explains signs of F1 retirement: ‘I need personal reflection’

Experienced Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso has shed light on his future in Formula 1 ahead of this weekend’s Saudi Grand Prix. At 42, Alonso, currently the oldest driver on the grid, has left open the decision to renew his contract, which expires at the end of 2024.

During the Bahrain Grand Prix, Alonso was cautious about his F1 future, suggesting he would make a decision after the first races of the season. Now, in an interview with Sky Sports in Saudi Arabia, Alonso clarified his previous statements and explained what he needs to assess before deciding whether to continue in the category.

“The most important thing for me is how I feel, how I get through the first series of travel, planes, time zones, physically, how I feel, how motivated I am,” Alonso said.

“I love the race. I love the race. It doesn’t matter if I’m fighting for the win, the podium or P12. I’m 100% committed to the race and the team. You have to be committed to the future. I’m sure I can give 100% to this team. Otherwise , it would be selfish for me to sign and just be in Formula 1 for fun.”

With his contract set to expire this year, speculation has linked Alonso to other teams, including Mercedes. However, the Spaniard stressed that he has to make a “personal” decision before thinking about which team he will run for.

“First, I have to make a personal commitment to give myself a few more years,” he added.

“If I want to sacrifice something else in my life, once I make a decision with myself, I’ll try to see what the best option is. We’re not at that stage right now.”

Alonso is one of 12 drivers out of contract until the end of 2024 and his measured approach underlines the importance of personal reflection and a total commitment to continue competing at the highest level. While speculation about his future continues, Alonso reveals that the final decision will be made after a thorough analysis of his physical condition, motivation and total commitment to the team.
