Hamilton’s Ferrari Move: What Prompted Former Mercedes Driver To Make The Switch

9 months ago By Sports Desk

Lewis Hamilton’s surprise transfer to Ferrari in 2025 caused an uproar in the automotive world, many are wondering what motivated the former Mercedes driver to make the bold switch. The answer seems to lie in a childhood dream and a desire for new challenges, echoing his earlier decision to move to Mercedes in 2013.

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Hamilton shared his thoughts in a post on social media, describing the past few days as “crazy” and “hugely emotional”. He expressed his gratitude to the Mercedes team, including his late mentor Niki Lauda and team principal Toto Wolff, before revealing that leaving the team was the hardest decision of his career.

The British driver offered the opportunity to fulfill another childhood dream: he could drive for Ferrari. After achieving unimaginable feats with Mercedes, Hamilton feels incredibly lucky to be wearing the red Scuderia. The move to Ferrari was not only a professional decision, but also a personal journey towards his long-term goals.

Drawing parallels with his move from McLaren to Mercedes in 2013, Hamilton recalled the feeling of taking a leap of faith into the unknown. At the time, he left the leading team that finished third the previous year to join the rebuilding project. The move paid off as McLaren entered a less successful period where Mercedes dominated spectacularly after the introduction of hybrid regulations in 2014.

Interestingly, as in 2013, Hamilton is moving its components a year before the big engine regulation change. This strategic choice may indicate Hamilton’s vision for the future of Formula 1 and his desire to spearhead this transformation.

Although his focus is directly on next season at Mercedes, Hamilton made it clear he is more motivated than ever. His determination to help Mercedes win again reflects his respect for the team and its success over the years. Hamilton bid farewell to Mercedes with a promise to end the partnership in style.

Ultimately, Hamilton’s journey to Ferrari is fueled by a unique combination of nostalgia, childhood dreams and a constant search for challenges. Formula One will witness a new phase in the legendary driver’s career as he prepares to take on the iconic red Ferrari in 2025.
