Rosberg Addresses Mercedes Return Speculation Amid Hamilton’s Exit

8 months ago By Sports Desk

Former Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg has played down speculation about a possible return to Mercedes in light of Lewis Hamilton’s departure. Rosberg, who retired at the end of 2016 after winning the world title with Mercedes, strongly ruled out a return to the sport as Hamilton’s replacement at the German team was sought.

In an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung, the 38-year-old German driver emphasized that his time in Formula 1 is over and he has no intention of returning. He noted that it takes a year of intense training to compete at the highest level, and that after a quick break, quick and accurate reactions are also reduced.

“It’s over. I didn’t plan to come back,” Rosberg said. He noted the complexity of the training required to compete in the sport and indicated that the period away from competition had reduced his abilities to the point where a competitive return was impossible.

While several names, including Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, have been mooted as potential replacements for Hamilton at Mercedes for the 2025 season, Rosberg has made it clear he is not considering a return to the cockpit. There is ongoing debate over who will replace George Russell next season, but the former German driver is not available for selection.

An interesting twist to the Mercedes debate is the possibility of a short-term business. This could serve as a transitional stage, allowing young talent to gain experience before taking on a full-time role in Formula 1. One possible candidate is Mercedes academy member Andre Kimi Antonelli, who recently won the FRECA title at the age of 17 and is set to join Formula 1 in 2024 with Prema Racing.

Rosberg’s decision to reject a return leaves Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff with the task of finding a suitable replacement for Hamilton. With Wolff’s reputation for developing young talent, the focus may turn to promising drivers like Antonelli for long-term development.

As the 2024 season approaches and uncertainty grows over Mercedes’ future, the Formula 1 community is eager to find out who will fill Hamilton’s shoes and how the team’s dynamics will evolve in the upcoming campaign.
